Virtual Continental Divide Trail Walk for Treadmills
New Mexico Desert Walk follows the southern terminus section of the Continental Divide Trail in southern New Mexico, beginning where one of the world’s major long-distance routes starts its journey north toward Canada. This 15-minute walking video moves through open desert terrain with compact sandy dirt, small gravel patches, and occasional dry wash crossings cutting through broad arid landscapes.
The terrain remains mostly flat with only slight natural undulations, creating a smooth and uninterrupted walking rhythm. Long sightlines define much of the route, with the trail extending ahead through open ground rather than disappearing into forest or canyon walls. For treadmill walking, the movement translates naturally around 4–5 km/h with a flat setting or light incline between 0–1%.
Desert vegetation stays scattered across the landscape. Yucca plants, cactus, dry grass, and low shrubs spread across warm earth-toned terrain beneath expansive skies. Distant rocky ridgelines and mountain backdrops remain visible throughout much of the walk, giving a constant sense of scale even though the trail itself stays simple underfoot.
The Continental Divide Trail stretches roughly 5,000 kilometres across the United States, running from the New Mexico–Mexico border through states including Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana before reaching Canada. Even on this shorter section, the setting carries a distinctly remote atmosphere tied to the beginning of a much larger route.
Wildlife in the region can include birds of prey circling overhead, rabbits moving through brush, and smaller desert species adapted to the dry conditions. The scenery changes gradually rather than dramatically, with shifting mountain perspectives and subtle variations in vegetation replacing sharp terrain transitions.
As an indoor walking workout or virtual walk, the route keeps a calm, continuous pace with open southwestern scenery and very few interruptions from start to finish.
