Virtual Continental Divide Trail New Mexico Part 1 for Treadmills
CDT Part 1 begins a long journey along the Continental Divide Trail through southern New Mexico. This 71-minute walking video travels across the state's dry high-desert landscape, following dirt tracks, sandy sections and rougher rocky ground.
The terrain is mostly gentle, with gradual rises and falls rather than any long or particularly steep climbs. Some sections are uneven and exposed, but the overall walking remains fairly steady. The 1% treadmill incline suits the general terrain, while the 4 km/h pace gives the session a relaxed hiking rhythm.
The landscape is a long way from the forests found along other parts of the Continental Divide Trail. Here, open scrub, dry grass and rocky ground stretch towards distant mountains, with wide views in almost every direction. There is little shelter in places, which gives the walk a distinctly open and remote feel.
The Continental Divide Trail runs for roughly 3,000 miles from the Mexican border through New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana before reaching Canada. This video captures just the beginning of that much longer journey, starting in the dry southern section of the trail.
For the treadmill version, around 4 km/h with a 1% incline keeps the movement close to the gradual terrain of the video. At 71 minutes, it also makes for a longer indoor walking workout, with the wide-open New Mexico landscape, desert tracks and distant mountains providing the scenery throughout.
