Virtual Castor Hanglands Walk for Treadmills

Leaf litter, compact dirt and patches of grass cover the paths through Castor Hanglands National Nature Reserve in Cambridgeshire, England. This 20-minute walking video follows the natural tracks through a quiet mix of ancient woodland, heath and wetland, with the character of the ground changing as the route moves between habitats.

The reserve is mostly gentle and low-lying, so there is little elevation to deal with. Some sections become muddy and uneven, particularly after wet weather, while other paths are firmer and easier underfoot. Mature oak, ash, birch, field maple, hazel and willow fill the woodland, with occasional openings into limestone grassland and scrub.

Castor Hanglands covers around 90 hectares about four miles west of Peterborough. It is a relatively small nature reserve surrounded by intensively farmed countryside, but contains four distinct habitats: woodland, grassland, wetland and scrub. Ponds and damp areas sit alongside the drier woodland paths, giving the walking scenery a noticeably varied feel despite the generally flat terrain.

The ancient woodland also contains traces of earlier land use, including old cultivation ridges associated with medieval farming. Wildlife is another part of the route, with woodland birds and butterflies alongside ponds supporting dragonflies, frogs, newts and toads. Fallow deer and muntjac are also found within the reserve.

For treadmill walking, the video's 5 km/h pace and 0% incline match the easy-going character of the route. There is no need to add much elevation to reproduce the walk, although 1% incline can provide a little extra effort while keeping the profile natural. The steady pace works well for a short indoor walking workout, with the changing English woodland scenery providing the visual focus rather than steep climbs or exposed viewpoints.
