Virtual Pig Island Walk for Treadmills
Pig Island sits beside the Mersey River at Bells Parade in Latrobe, northern Tasmania. This 36-minute walking video follows the easy loop around the island, passing through grassy areas, wetlands, paperbark trees and sections of boardwalk. The river stays close to the track for much of the walk, giving the whole route an open, riverside feel.
The walking is almost completely flat, with formed paths and only a few slightly uneven sections around tree roots. After rain or flooding, parts of the island can become quite wet, but there is very little elevation change. That makes the 0% treadmill incline a good match for the actual character of the walk.
At around 5 km/h, the pace is comfortable and steady, without any real focus on climbing or difficult terrain. The scenery provides most of the variety, with the track moving between open grass, wetland and stands of paperbark along the river.
Pig Island is a small recreation and nature area within the wider Bells Parade precinct. The Mersey surrounds much of the island, while the wetlands and native vegetation provide habitat for a range of birdlife. Platypus can also be found around the Mersey and nearby wetlands, particularly when things are quiet.
There is some interesting history around the area too. Latrobe grew as an important river port and shipbuilding centre, and the landscape around Pig Island has since seen restoration work aimed at improving the native vegetation and wetland habitat.
The footage was recorded only a few weeks after the major 2022 Tasmania floods, so there are still signs of the flooding around the riverbank, including debris and some ongoing works. It gives the video a slightly different feel from a typical polished walking trail, with the river and surrounding landscape showing the effects of the recent weather.
At 36 minutes, this is a simple and relaxed Tasmanian walk rather than a challenging hike. The flat track, steady 5 km/h pace and 0% incline make it an easy treadmill session, while the river, wetlands and mature vegetation provide plenty of natural scenery along the way.
