Virtual Nelson Falls Walk for Treadmills

The Nelson Falls Walk follows the Nelson River through cool-temperate rainforest in Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park, part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. This 18-minute walking video heads along the forest track towards Nelson Falls, with the river and dense rainforest staying close to the path for most of the walk.

The track is flat and easy, with sections of boardwalk passing through moss-covered forest. There are no steps or steep climbs, so the walking pace stays comfortable and consistent. Sassafras and myrtle trees rise above ferns and moss, while damp vegetation fills the forest floor. The Nelson River runs alongside the track, becoming more noticeable as the walk gets closer to the falls.

There are also interpretation panels along the route explaining some of the ancient plants found in the rainforest and the area's Gondwanan history. Ferns are particularly common, with at least seven species growing among the mosses, fungi and other plants that thrive in the cool, wet conditions.

Nelson Falls itself changes quite a bit depending on recent rainfall. There is always water flowing over the falls, but after heavy rain the cascade can become much more powerful. The Nelson River adds to the atmosphere, with the sound of running water accompanying the walk through the forest.

For the treadmill version, the video is set at around 5 km/h with a 0% incline. This is a close match for the flat nature of the real track and makes the video an easy indoor walking session, recovery walk or short workout. The rainforest and river provide plenty of movement and changing scenery without needing any significant incline.

The official Nelson Falls Walk is around 1.4 kilometres return and takes about 20 minutes, so this 18-minute video is a close representation of the real walk. It's a short route, but the combination of cool rainforest, flowing river and Nelson Falls makes it a particularly scenic little walk through the Tasmanian wilderness.
