Virtual Montezuma’s Falls Walk for Treadmills
The Montezuma's Falls Walk follows the route of the old North East Dundas Tramway through dense rainforest on Tasmania's West Coast. Starting near Williamsford, close to Rosebery, this 105-minute walking video heads along the former tramway corridor towards Montezuma Falls, one of Tasmania's highest waterfalls.
The old tramway has left a fairly broad and mostly compact track, making the walking much easier than many of the rougher West Coast trails. There are gentle rises and some uneven sections, along with a few small creek crossings, but no long or particularly steep climbs. The full route has around 100 metres of elevation change spread across the walk.
The rainforest is the real highlight. Leatherwood, myrtle and sassafras grow among giant tree ferns, moss and fungi, with the wet West Coast climate keeping everything thick and green. The scenery changes gradually as the track follows the old railway alignment through the Ring River valley, with creeks and dense vegetation appearing along the way.
Towards the end of the walk, Montezuma Falls becomes the main focus. The waterfall drops around 104 metres through the rainforest-covered valley, and a suspension bridge near the falls provides a different view back towards the cascade and surrounding slopes.
For the treadmill version, the video is set at around 5 km/h with a 0% incline. This doesn't reproduce every small rise and fall of the real track, but it gives the long walk a comfortable, continuous rhythm. Adding a gentle 1% incline would make it a little more active while keeping the same general feel.
The full Montezuma's Falls Walk is around 11.5 kilometres return and takes roughly three hours to complete on foot. At 105 minutes, this virtual version gives you a substantial amount of time on the trail without trying to recreate the entire walk.
The old tramway, dense rainforest and gradual approach to the falls make this a particularly atmospheric West Coast walk. The suspension bridge and Montezuma Falls provide the big finish after spending most of the route surrounded by the thick Tasmanian rainforest.
