Virtual Hellyer Gorge Walk for Treadmills

The Hellyer Gorge Reserve follows the Hellyer River through a narrow rainforest gorge on Tasmania's north-west coast. This 12-minute walking video stays among the dense temperate forest, with the river, rocky gorge walls and thick vegetation close to the track for most of the walk.

The track is a mixture of dirt and gravel, with exposed roots, rocks and some uneven sections underfoot. There are a few small rises and descents, but nothing particularly steep or sustained. Giant tree ferns fill the understory, while moss-covered trees and tall native forest keep much of the walk shaded.

The Hellyer River runs alongside the track, with flowing water and small waterfalls appearing between the trees. Myrtle-beech and sassafras are common through the wetter parts of the gorge, where the combination of moss, ferns and damp forest gives the walk its classic north-west Tasmanian feel.

For the treadmill version, the pace is around 5 km/h with a 0% incline. That keeps things simple and relaxed, making it suitable for a short indoor walking session or an easy recovery walk. The real track has some gentle undulations, but the overall terrain is mild enough that a flat treadmill setting works well.

Hellyer Gorge is a relatively small reserve, but the narrow valley makes the rainforest feel surprisingly enclosed. The track stays close to the river and forest throughout, with very little open country or development visible along the way.

At just 12 minutes, this is a short virtual walk, but it still gives a good taste of the wetter landscapes found across Tasmania's north-west. Giant tree ferns, mossy trees, rocky ground and the sound of the Hellyer River provide most of the scenery from beginning to end.
